  • Product description

A reproduction of the Ancient Roman “Portland Vase” by Wedgwood. The 3rd Duke of Portland, who owned the original Portland Vase, loaned it to Josiah Wedgwood to create a reproduction. It took Wedgwood four years of trials to recreate the vase in Jasperware; the delicate and thin glass used to create the relief on the original proved incredibly difficult to replicate. In 1790, Wedgwood managed to pull it off, serving as his last major achievement. There is much debate over the iconography of the vase, and after many years of research and debate, it remains unclear whether it is representative of mythology, history, or a confluence of the two. Circa 1865, this blue and white Jasperware recreation of the Portland Vase is a beautiful representation of Ancient Roman composition with classic Wedgwood mastery.

This vase is one of hundreds of pieces of ceramics that are available at our location in Grandview! Come in today and see the full collection.
