  • Product description

An exquisite example of a historic tradition, this heishi bead necklace is composed of tortoise shell, turquoise, and sterling silver. “Heishi” indicates the way in which the beads are made: raw material is cut down to small bits, drilled through, stranded, and sanded down as a single strand. This creates a uniform consistency and requires an immense amount of patience for the artisan, even with today’s technologies and tools.

This necklace has ten strands, consisting of vintage tortoise shell and turquoise beads. Not only is there a section purely of turquoise beads, but they are also artfully scattered throughout. Thread onto the strands is a round, flower pendant made of tortoise with turquoise embedded within the petals. Sterling silver caps enclose the ends of the strands, and end with a simple hook connection. This delicate piece truly is an exhibition of Native American craftsmanship and vintage materials.
