About the Artists:
John Chester Buttre (1821-1893) was an American engraver and lithographer who has a particular interest in political and military themes and figures. He is attributed to over 3,000 engraved portraits of key American people. Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) was an American painter who was at the forefront of American portraiture. His depiction of George Washington is the most famous of the president, appearing on the one dollar bill for over a century.
