About the Artist:
Kyril Vassilev was born in Vidin, Bulgaria in 1908 to a civil engineer that built railroads for Czarist Russia. He began his artistic career at the age of six by selling 200 portrait drawings for a surprisingly large sum of money for the Bulgarian War Relief fund. From there Vassilev would always be interested in portraiture and in 1938 emigrated to America with full assistance from his government and even letter of introduction from the palace officials. At his first American studio, he was commissioned to paint a forged Rembrandt and Jan Steen, but quickly stopped not wanting to be known as a forger. From there he moved in with Jack Dempsey, living with him and his wife for 6 months. From there he became well known and received commissions up until he took ill in 1975, he passed away in 1987.
