About the Artist:
Jean Jensem (1920-2013), born Hovhannes Semerdjian, was a French-Armenian painter. His work is internationally known and has been recognized for its importance for reinforcing cultural ties between Armenia and France by the Armenian president. His primary inspirations were Goya and Brueghel, with his mother and siblings acting as heroes in his formative works. Jensem was categorized as a “miserablist”, or an artist who depicts unfortunate people.
