    Gouache painting by listed artist and illustrationist Gertrude Alice Kay (1884-1939). This painting depicts a wonderful Italian countryside scene, full of character. Two cattle or oxen are pulling a cart of hay, with the farmer standing behind it. A rustic two story villa is pictured, with a bright blue sky with white puffy clouds.


    About the Artist:

    Gertrude Alice Kay (1884-1939) is a listed artist and illustrator originally from Alliance, Ohio. She studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Design and with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute. She found success in the male dominated world of commercial illustration, along with other female students of Howard Pyle such as Sarah Stilwell Weber, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Violet Oakley, Alice Barber Stephens, and Katherine Pyle. She produced covers and story illustrations for Ladies’ Home Journal and other magazines from 1908 through the 1920s. She also illustrated children’s books and traveled extensively through China, Japan, Ireland, England, and Italy.
