  • Product description

SOLD A French World War I poster depicting a French soldier strangling an imperial German eagle as the eagle’s beak bloodies the soldier’s wrist. Société Générale was a French bank promoting war bonds, or “Emprunt National”. This poster was initially created circa 1918 during the final months of the war when national debt was running high and civilian war sentiments were running low. “Pour le suprême effort” in the upper left conveys that buying war bonds is “for the greatest effort”.
