About the Artist:
Charles A. Owens (1922-1997) was born in Maysville Kentucky in 1922 to an opera singer and a saxophone player. As a child he won first prize of $50 dollars in a school art competition by painting a color map of the United States. During his life he worked at a variety of jobs including baker, chef, ice cream maker, construction worker, truck driver, bootlegger and mechanic as well as serving in the Marines. Upon moving to Columbus Ohio in 1949 he witnessed the postwar growth of the city while continuing to paint. “I just paint what I’ve seen.” Owens also liked to paint historical scenes as well as scenes from the Bible. His paintings are simple but strikingly powerful.
