What do you collect?
At GrandView Mercantile, we love nothing more than helping collectors expand and upgrade their collections. Contact us here to let us know what you collect. We will be your eyes and ears as new items arrive daily. You will receive special emails about your collector category. (We will never sell or share your information, nor will we bombard you with emails!) Whether you collect 18th century portraits, rare Steuben glassware, Civil War memorabilia, antique books, advertising signs, clocks, or cameras, we want to hear from you!

Why do we collect?

All collectors share the love of the hunt and the satisfaction that comes from finding a treasure and giving it a place of honor in their collection. But why do we collect? Is it to recapture our youth by purchasing the lunch box we remember carrying in grade school? Is it to live vicariously in another time when we wonder who carried the antique pocket watch now in our possession?

Some people see collecting as an investment that will hopefully lead to financial gain. Others say it must be a “gene” that some people have; a gene that pre-programs people with the desire to accumulate and surround themselves with beautiful things.  Mapplethorpe insisted that "no collector knows his true motivation." For most of us, this is probably true, although most collectors would say they have more than one motivating force. Nonetheless, the ideas of learning, preserving, and appreciating history are paramount to collectors in every genre.

Collectors Among Us

Collecting is my joy; it gives me great satisfaction. When I go to a country, I go to flea markets, antique stores. I am always looking for something.
Ursula Andress

Collecting has been my great extravagance. It's a way of being. I collect for the same reason that I eat too much-I'm one of nature's shoppers.
Howard Hodgkin

Recently I've been collecting Star Wars figures again. When I was a kid I couldn't afford them. Now I can so I've been buying them and keeping them in their box for a later date when they'll be worth a lot of money.
Mackenzie Crook

Art is not a treasure in the past or an importation from another land, but part of the present life of all living and creating peoples.
Franklin D. Roosevelt

I have always wished I could learn to be a potter. I love collecting ceramics; it would be so fulfilling to create something lovely.
Julie Andrews

Every passion borders on the chaotic, but the collector's passion borders on the chaos of memories.

Walter Benjamin

Our admiration of the antique is not admiration of the old, but of the natural.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
